A friend of mine always says he likes Syrah with chocolate; whenever a bottle of Hermitage is popped he asks if anyone has any chocolate. Personally I think that combination is revolting and refuse to pander to his loopy demands. Port is certainly a better match; I like a young, rigorous Port with a bit of fire rather than an aged tawny.

You final suggestion, Champagne and going with the mood of the event, is certainly the way forward. I don't need much of an excuse to pop a bottle of fizz, but a romantic evening spent with that partner is a brilliant reason to do so.

Cheers,
David.
